CIVITAS DESTINATIONS enables Limassol and Malta to exchange cycling expertise
The second CIVITAS DESTINATIONS work placement took place earlier this year in Limassol (Cyprus). From 16-18 May 2018, a representative from the University of Malta (UoM) visited the Limassol Tourism Company (LTC). Both organisations are partners in CIVITAS DESTINATIONS.
The shared characteristics of Limassol and the Valletta harbour region (Malta), prompted the two sites to organise a visit to learn from each other and further exchange about cycling, bike sharing, and sustainable mobility in general.
The placement enabled the University of Malta (UoM), which is currently assisting Transport Malta with the development of an (e-)bike and car sharing campaign, to discuss and exchange with the Limassol Tourism Company and other Limassol-based partners about the methods and strategies used to promote and extend the city's bike sharing system.
The programme included meetings with government and local authority officials, non-profit organisations, entrepreneurs and individual cyclists, as well as a series of technical visits. Designed to support knowledge transfer between the two sites, these focused on three main topics:
- General cycling activity and infrastructure implemented, including discussion about the planning tools and mechanisms used to design cycling infrastructure and facilities and integrate cycling into the local transport network;
- Campaigning tools to promote cycling and bike sharing;
- Operation of the bicycle sharing system, including details on its business and operational model and the use of the bikes by tourists and locals.
The exchanges will be used to support measure implementation and develop new ideas for promotional campaigns and activities at the two sites.
Both locations are working on related measures as part of CIVITAS DESTNATIONS, with three in Limassol - find more information on measure 1, 2 and 3 -Â and one in Malta (details here).
