Summary

A multimodal route planner promoting sustainable mobility by integrating real-time traffic data and offering smarter travel options. Smart Ways to Antwerp is a multimodal route planning platform developed by the City of Antwerp to promote sustainable and accessible mobility. What began in 2016 as a response to major roadworks has evolved into a cornerstone of the city’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan and regional mobility strategy. The platform helps residents, commuters and visitors plan efficient journeys by integrating real-time data on public transport, cycling routes, shared mobility, roadworks and the low-emission zone. Available as both an app and a web tool, it encourages a shift away from private car use by offering clear alternatives such as bikes, public transport, park-and-ride facilities or walking. Through behavioural change campaigns, datadriven route planning and strong public-private collaboration, Smart Ways to Antwerp makes sustainable travel the easy, smart and preferred choice.

Good Example

The platform successfully managed the mobility impacts of major infrastructure works (like the oosterweel connection) in antwerp by guiding over 1 million users annually to sustainable and multimodal travel alternatives, significantly reducing single-occupancy car trips during construction phases.
