Parking policy and functioning of P&R systems in Europe - Workshop in Krakow

CIVITAS Initiative

A lot of Polish cities have been recently facing problems concerning parking issues especially during the times when the number of cars in Poland constantly grows.

The demand for parking space does not meet with parking space supply, especially in historical parts of the cities. This, in turn, strongly influences quality of life in cities. Polish cities are very much interested in experience of other European cities in the same field, especially in relatively new solutions like e.g. Park & Ride systems. Therefore, the city of Kraków organized a two-day workshop “Parking policy and functioning of P&R systems in selected European cities”. The workshop took place on 22-23rd September 2011, gathering around 50 participants from ca. 15 cities from whole Poland. They represented public administration, transport boards and private companies dealing with transport and particularly parking issues in cities. The first day was a plenary session, opened by a transport professor being the Mayor of Krakow’s adviser in the transport domain. This part of the workshop focused on presentations of parking and P&R solutions from the cities of Antwerp (Belgium), Nantes (France), Gothenborg (Sweden), Munich (Germany), Krakow and Warsaw (Poland). Speakers represented both municipalities and private companies – operators of P&R systems. The second day was an interactive part and was preceded by a technical visit in the city. Participants could get familiar with some parking problems existing in Krakow during the study visit and then tried to solve them working in groups over some case studies. The participants were very active during the second day session. Both, study visits and interactive sessions were prepared and carried out by the University of Technology from Krakow. Each participant was handed in a special brochure, containing descriptions of the best practices tested in the parking field by many European cities. The brochure was prepared for the workshop’s purposes. Krakow’s workshop appeared to be a real success basically due to its theme that occurred to be very attractive and in good time for Polish cities.Downloads - Workshop PresentationsThe role of parking systems in WarsawLeszek CISŁO and Marcin WAPNIARSKI (Download)Parking policy and functioning of P&R system in MunichWolfgang GROSSMANN (Download)P&R system in the Göteborg regionMikael IVARI (Download)The parking policy, main stake in mobility issues in NantesSandrine LE BOURHIS (Download)Parking in AntwerpCynthia VAN DER LINDEN (Download)
