New real-time information system improves passenger experience

In December 2012, Tallinn saw the launch of a real-time information system at six bus-stops. This pilot project has been implemented under CIVITAS MIMOSA.

The measure aims to reassure waiting passengers at bus stops with accurate information on the arrival of the next bus and in turn decrease the perceived waiting time and passenger experience. All buses and trolleybuses in Tallinn equipped with GPS devices are tracked by satellites to pinpoint their location in the city and estimated time of arrival at bus stops. The screens that are currently located at six bus stops also display supplementary messages such as traffic jams, accidents or other issues that might cause delays.  They support voice announcements, which can be an extremely useful for visually impaired people and improve accessibility of public transport for all. Activated by a remote control, voice communication tells the passenger about the arrival of the next bus or trolley-bus. Real-time public transport information is also accessible via the web on Tallinn’s city map webpage where passengers can follow the movement of public transport vehicles live. Given its popularlity with passengers, Tallinn Transport is now looking at expanding the real-time system to other bus stops in the city alongside the roll out of a smart app providing real-time information to passengers.
