Munich Launches Smart Delivery Zones to Improve Urban Logistics and Reduce Traffic

metaCCAZE's Trailblazer City, Munich, has launched a new pilot project to digitalise delivery zones and improve urban logistics. The pilot provides real-time information on available loading and delivery bays, helping commercial transport operators find suitable stopping locations more efficiently while reducing traffic caused by searching for parking.
As part of the pilot, Munich's Department of Mobility has equipped 21 delivery and loading zones in the city centre and around Fraunhoferstraße with smart sensors. The sensors transmit occupancy data directly to the free mo2B app, allowing users to view available delivery spaces in real time and navigate directly to them.
The pilot includes both traditional loading zones and Munich's multifunctional "3L zones", which can be used for loading, unloading and service-related activities. To improve visibility, selected zones have also been marked with the word Lieferzone ("Delivery Zone") on the road surface.
By providing accurate occupancy information, the mo2B app aims to reduce the misuse of delivery zones, ease parking pressure and minimise unnecessary traffic in the city centre. The service is expected to benefit logistics operators, tradespeople, care services and other authorised users.
The service is being implemented by the City of Munich together with metaCCAZE partners Smart City System GmbH, Stadtraum GmbH, DB Schenker and the Technical University of Munich (TUM). The pilot will assess how the service is received by professional users and citizens, while identifying opportunities for future improvements.
The project also supports Munich's broader ambition to optimise urban space for commercial transport. By 2035, the city aims to establish around 1,000 designated delivery zones and expand sensor technology to other dedicated parking spaces, including disabled parking bays, EV charging spaces and car-sharing spaces.
