Updating the SUMP Guidelines: Adapting to New Developments and Best Practices in Urban Mobility Planning
Parma ItalyWorkshop
To ensure that the SUMP Guidelines continuously address the diverse and evolving needs of cities, this event will bring together representatives from local governments, transportation experts, and researchers. The update of the Guidelines is primarily intended to consider new trends, developments, challenges and emerging technologies as well as illustrate more recent good practice examples since it last release in 2019.
Participants will have the opportunity to share their experiences with the current guidelines and provide feedback to help identify areas that need improvement and updating, as well as where new support, tools, and best practices are required. This will enable the SUMP Guidelines to be future-proof and ensure a high degree of practical applicability and usefulness.
The workshop will feature interactive group discussions focused on:
- Sharing Experiences: Participants will discuss their practical experiences with the existing SUMP Guidelines, highlighting what has worked well and where challenges have arisen.
- Emerging Developments: The session will explore how recent developments in mobility are influencing urban mobility planning and discuss the relevance of the current guidelines.
- Recommendations and Innovations: Attendees will brainstorm and suggest areas of the SUMP Guidelines requiring updates, including identifying case studies that exemplify real-world challenges and innovative solutions.
This workshop is designed to facilitate peer-to-peer exchange among urban mobility professionals, providing a unique opportunity to shape the future of urban mobility planning in Europe. Participants will engage in deep discussions, share their insights, and explore the feasibility of applying proposed solutions in their own cities.
The side event is organised by Rupprecht Consult in the context of the EU Urban Mobility Observatory project, supported by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport. This workshop will serve as an interactive platform for SUMP experts, practitioners, and stakeholders to discuss the ongoing update of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning (SUMP) Guidelines
