Elche (Spain)

Elche, located in the province of Alicante in southeastern Spain, is home to approximately 240,000 inhabitants and covers 326.1 km², making it one of Spain's largest municipalities by area. Situated on the flat plain of the Vinalopó River and close to the Mediterranean coast, the city benefits from favourable conditions for walking and cycling. However, its dispersed urban structure, extensive industrial areas, surrounding agricultural land and strong seasonal tourism create challenges for sustainable mobility and regional connectivity.

The municipality has adopted a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PMUS) to reduce car dependency, improve accessibility and encourage active and public transport. Key measures include expanding cycling infrastructure, improving pedestrian routes, modernising public transport, enhancing road safety and supporting low-emission mobility. These actions complement Elche's Climate Action Plan (PACES), which promotes decarbonisation and climate resilience. Together, these strategies aim to improve air quality, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create a safer, healthier and more sustainable urban environment.
