A Portuguese project co-funded through the CIVITAS Activity Fund has won an international award at the 2015 World Congress of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) in Milan (Italy). Entitled ‘Let Us Move You’, the project was organised by Lisbon’s transport operator Trasportes de Lisboa and the city’s metro company, Metropolitano de Lisboa.

Mr Rui Loureiro, Chairman of the Board of Metropolitano de Lisboa, received the 3rd Youth for Public Transport (Y4PT) International Youth Award at the award ceremony during the congress’s official dinner on 10 June. The winners of other UITP awards were also announced, with organisations from across Europe and the world being recognised for their achievements.

‘Let Us Move You’ aimed to increase the number of young adults using the metro for everyday journeys, as well as to include them in the decision-making process for improving sustainable mobility in the Portuguese capital. A particularly important aspect was addressing the barriers that young people see when using public transport and which influence their travel behaviour.

A series of workshops on university campuses were organised on university campuses located close to metro stations, and an online survey of young people’s travel behaviour in Lisbon was circulated. The survey attracted over 270 responses, with suggestions for improvements ranging from better communication of travel information from staff and information channels, and improved integration with smartphone applications. The workshops produced further suggestions and ideas for making travelling by metro more appealing to young adults.

The project also included a competition to find innovative new ways to improve sustainable mobility in Lisbon with a first prize of € 1000. The winning project proposed the concept of offering electric bike-sharing to complement conventional public transport.

The project received € 6000 in co-funding in the second call of the CIVITAS Activity Fund, which offers co-funding for mobility projects in four competitive calls in 2014 and 2015. The final call for applications to the Fund will take place later this year.
