The 19 CIVITAS cities which currently run demonstration projects under the Initiative had elected Göteborg with a majority of 40% of the votes. “This city has been very active in the promotion of the CIVITAS initiative towards the city’s inhabitants,” said Helen Holland. “Göteborg has also been working hard on the visible integration of CIVITAS measures in the local transport policy and has been excellent in exchanging information and experiences with other CIVITAS cities and CIVITAS Forum cities.” Vice Mayor of Göteborg Anneli Hulthen was delighted to have won the award: “It is very nice to see that our efforts in the field of mobility and urban transport policy have been noticed. I am very proud to take this award home.”
Award for a CIVITAS demonstration city
Winner city: Aalborg
The CIVITAS Award for New Mobility Culture Leadership went to the Danish city of Aalborg for aiming to increase the modal share of its public transport through the improvement of its image. “The city has shown clear leadership in the extension of the public transport network, the use of Intelligent Transport System and complementary car-sharing schemes,” said Helen Holland of the Policy Advisory Committee (PAC). “Public private partnerships, citizens involvement and better design of the urban transport system carry the strong political support of the city’s authority. This integrated approach leads the way to a new mobility culture.” All three CIVITAS Awards were handed over by Mrs Karla Peijs, Dutch Minister of Transport.
Award for a CIVITAS Forum city
Winner city: La Rochelle
It was the French city of La Rochelle that won this prestigious award, according to Holland “because La Rochelle is building on a long-standing tradition of innovation in urban ecology. Amongst many good measures the city has developed a system of semi-mass transport, as a worthy alternative for the private car. These and other measures are politically very risky and ambitious and display a clear political leadership and technical competence.” Jean-Marie Grellier of La Rochelle was very happy with his city’s achievement: “I already called my colleagues back home to let them know about the award. Everybody was very excited. We are especially proud because the winners are chosen by the other CIVITAS members. It’s great to be rewarded for our efforts.”
