Summary
The Smart Way to Antwerp launched a multimodal route planner on its website. This has now also been made available as an app for smartphones. These both feed into Antwerp's work as part of the CIVITAS PORTIS project.
The route planner combines routes on foot with those on (folding) bikes, the city's Velo shared bikes, tram, bus, train, and car.
In this way, they are multimodal. For instance, a proposed route might require travellers to take their car or bike to a local train station, travel to Antwerp’s Central Station, and cover the last part of their journey on foot or with a city bike.
Car routes are diverted to park and rides and public car parks in the city. The app shows how it is sometimes easier to reach destinations by combining transport modes.
Favourite locations and routes can be saved in the app, ensuring that users can access their most frequently used routes easily. They can also choose to receive notifications through the app in case of roadworks or when new mobility solutions are launched, such as a new bike or car sharing system.
A smart map marks interesting locations, for example park and rides, tram stops, car sharing hubs, and vending machines at which drivers can buy passes for Antwerp's Low Emission Zone. The smart map can also be used to calculate a route to a user's chosen destination.
