Tampere advances remote-controlled autonomous mobility through metaCCAZE

metaCCAZE Project: Tampere, Finland launches its first autonomous bus

Since November 2025, metaCCAZE partner Remoted has operated an autonomous connection between Hervantajärvi tram stop and the Lintuhytti residential area in the metaCCAZE Trailblazer City Tampere. The route is 1.2 kilometers long, and has proven to be an ideal environment for autonomous vehicle operations: consistent, predictable, and well-suited for testing next-generation mobility solutions.

Nordic winter conditions have introduced additional complexities. For example, increased demand for cabin heating has impacted battery performance, prompting the team to actively explore automated charging concepts. These innovations aim to extend operational hours and ensure reliable service even in demanding climates.

Until now, an onboard safety operator has ensured traffic safety within the Tampere use case. As the technology reaches a new level of maturity, metaCCAZE is now entering the next phase: transitioning safety operators from the shuttle to a remote control centre. While the shuttle continues to operate along the same route, its performance is now monitored and supported remotely, marking a key step towards fully autonomous and scalable operations.

This shift is enabled by advanced technology. High-speed cameras stream real-time visuals to the control center, supporting teleoperation when needed. In addition, LiDAR data provides precise environmental awareness, while dedicated tools allow operators to adjust routes and manage vehicle systems efficiently. Work is currently underway with Liikenne- ja viestintävirasto Traficom / Transport- och kommunikationsverket Traficom to obtain the required permit to operate. Sounds like a James Bond movie. Maybe the next one?

From a passenger’s perspective, the experience remains seamless: quiet, reliable, and forward-looking. It feels like stepping into the future of public transport, where innovation works quietly in the background to make everyday travel smoother and more sustainable.
