San Sebastián signs Road Safety Pact with local stakeholders
The City of San Sebastián has signed a civic Road Safety Pact with 35 local organisations involved in mobility. The Pact represents a joint commitment to protect vulnerable road users and reduce road accidents. Among the 35 members of the Mobility Advisory Council there are associations, private companies and political parties.
The pact is based on a simple principle, namely the respect for human life and the protection of pedestrians and cyclists. The 35 organisations agree to jointly support and reinforce measures of the San Sebastián City Council that include:Road design measures including 30 kilometre zones, shared space and traffic safety audits;Post-accident care, based on a newly developed protocol;Enforcement, including the compliance to the local regulations for safe cycling;Awareness campaigns for young people, parents, educators and older people;Implementation of sustainable mobility policies that promote safe cycling and walking.Moreover, the Pact foresees concrete interventions at various black spots in the city: San Martín; Urbieta; Avenida Libertad; Ategorrieta; Easo; Miracruz; Paseo Colón and José Elósegui; Avenida de Navarra and Duque de Mandas.The development of the Pact and several of the measures that it includes are part of the CIVITAS project. The City Council considers the close involvement of the 35 stakeholders of the Mobility Advisory Council as an important prerequisite for a successful local policy on road safety.
