Last month, CIVITAS project MOBILITIES for EU, held a visible and engaging role at the IRF World Congress 2024, a prominent global event focused on road infrastructure and sustainable mobility. The event took place in Istanbul, from 15-18 October, and gathered over 2,000 participants from more than 80 countries. Gathered participants, including ministers, international organisations, and key public and private stakeholders, discussed how to reimagine transport systems to build a greener, safer, and more inclusive future.

MOBILITIES for EU used the IRF World Congress as an opportunity to present the solutions and best practices taking place in one of its pilot cities, Madrid. In the session, 'Electric Buses in Madried', Álvaro Rodríguez López de Guereña, a representative from project partner EMT Madrid, discussed the electric buses that will also be tested and implemented in the area surrounding Mercamadrid—the largest Spanish market and one of the most active in Europe—which is home to Madrid’s pilot, or, Urban Mobility Lab.

Additionally, and with its sister project metaCCAZE, MOBILITIES for EU hosted the session, "Towards Greener Horizons: Building Climate-Resilient Cities through Mobility Innovation", which focused on providing real-life examples of how cities are reducing emissions, overcoming challenges in public acceptance, and adapting infrastructure to support mobility solutions. The session kicked off with a keynote from Daria Kuzmina, Senior Manager of Knowledge & Innovation at UITP, who highlighted the pivotal role of public transport in enhancing urban climate resilience and embracing new mobility technologies. The keynote was followed by a panel discussion, featuring Julia María Vicente Gómez, the MOBILITIES FOR EU Project Coordinator; Sergio Fernandez Balaguer from EMT Madrid; Tamara Djukic, the metaCCAZE Project Coordinator; Theodora Betsidou from MaaSLab; and Seda Özdemir from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM).

The IRF World Congress 2024 underscored MOBILITIES for EU’s commitment to supporting European cities in their journey towards 2030 climate targets and fostering collaborations that drive sustainable urban transformation.
