Car free zone, Pecs

CIVITAS Initiative

Pécs, CIVITAS - Trendsetter’s Hungarian project partner has introduced a car-free zone in the central city areas in order to reduce radically the number of private cars visitng the downtown. This measure has multilateral effects: it protects the monuments protected by the UNESCO Cultural World Heritage title and offers significantly better living, working and leisure circumstances.

In different parts of the inner city 20 to 80% reduction has been measured in the number of cars, and with the additional measures of limiting speed, limiting freighters’ access and re-organizing city traffic policy, the environmental conditions in the city centre of Pécs has improved a lot in recent years. Together with other measures of the CIVITAS - Trendsetter Project in Pecs, traffic and public transportation management has become on the one hand a key issue in city politics and on the other hand a major success in all aspects of social-economic and environmental life.
