Better bus service and improved dynamic information at bus stops in Burgos due to CiViTAS CARAVEL

CIVITAS Initiative

31 new bus shelters at various bus stops around the city will provide real-time information on estimated waiting times and on the bus route. At the same time, following the study made by CiViTAS CARAVEL, various bus lines have been optimised, a number of unnecessary bus stops, that slowed down the service, have been eliminated and other lines have been extended in developing urban areas.

While awaiting the final measures (e.g. the contactless card), some of the important measures of CiViTAS CARAVEL have now been concluded, such as the installation of 31 information display panels that will provide real-time information, on waiting times in minutes for the several bus lines. The installation is now complete, except for slight improvements to the data transmission system so that they can start to function shortly.Additional new bus lines, that link up developing urban areas (Fuentecillas, Villamar, S4) with the city centre, including the extension of already existing lines, were now put under operation. Finally, the optimisation of the bus lines carried out has allowed more than 10 minutes to be saved on various lines, improving both frequency and travel times. Initially the Council Department was worried over the expected response of the public to bus stops that were not as close as before to certain destinations, but the comments have been supportive in general and public transport is in increasing use. In total, in 2007 is expected an increase of usage of the municipal busses of around 6%.
