SMILE

Summary

The measure focused on providing young people with information in an attractive and appealing way in order to influence their attitudes before they have acquired unsustainable travel habits.

Implementing sustainable mobility

At the time of measure implementation, traffic congestion was one of the main problems facing Suceava. In order to tackle the problem, one of the city’s goals was to make public transport a viable alternative for daily journeys in the city centre. This involved raising awareness among the city’s inhabitants, so that future investment in transport measures in Suceava will be accompanied by changes in people’s mentality and behaviour. The measure focused on young people, in order to help them understand their responsibility in the future development of the city.

Progress

Activities included:

  • disseminating printed materials and press releases;
  • posting information on the city’s website;
  • running e-mail campaigns;
  • installing variable message signs in visible locations;
  • providing real-time travel information via display panels at bus and tram stops and terminals at the Mobility Centre;
  • organising workshops and roundtables in schools;
  • creating personalised travel plans for municipal employees and schoolchildren pupils;
  • promoting the city’s park and ride and park and walk facilities;
  • providing eco-driving training;
  • organising marketing campaigns for alternative fuels;
  • marking eco-routes with clearly visible signposts; and
  • participating in national and international conferences and forums.

Outcomes

  • Compared to 2005 levels, the occupancy rate of public transport vehicles had risen by 3.1 times by 2008.
  • Valuable feedback was received as to future information activities that are likely to be most appealing to the public and to lead to the best results.
