Summary

The development of new efficient goods delivery services by private and public operators was welcomed by local small businesses.

Implementing sustainable mobility

The measure was designed to encourage all actors in city logistics to participate in optimising the supply chain.

After a three-year trial in the framework of the ELCIDIS project (2002-2005), which focused on goods distribution using electric vehicles, it was decided to improve the efficiency of the system by focusing on the attitudes and requirements of all partners involved.

Progress

The main activities focused on:

  • motivating all traders, from individual retailers to hypermarket managers, to use the system;
  • providing specific incentives for small and medium-sized enterprises to convince them to invest in clean vehicles;
  • encouraging private goods carriers to use clean vehicles and coordinate their deliveries;
  • making specific arrangements with distributors regarding the use of clean vehicles, delivery hours and coordination;
  • developing marketing and communication plans to promote the goods distribution system; and
  • launching a freight forum to demonstrate, explain and encourage good practices.

Outcomes

  • Cooperation was fostered between logistics operators.
  • The use of clean vehicles for goods distribution increased.
