Summary

Data obtained by monitoring traffic conditions can enhance the effectiveness of traffic control and management systems.

Implementing sustainable mobility

The measure was introduced as part of Preston’s efforts to improve the reliability of the public transport system. The main objective was to reinforce the integration of different transport information systems, which were dedicated to different functions and/or run by different operators.

The second objective was to strengthen the services that information systems can provide to users.

Other objectives were to:

  • improve the management of traffic within the city centre;
  • increase the use of public transport;
  • reduce traffic congestion;
  • improve the quality of travel information; and
  • reduce journey times through bus priority.

Progress

Strategies were developed to control and manage traffic in Preston city centre, triggered by monitoring traffic conditions via automated systems.

Outcomes

The reliability of public transport services was improved by the implementation of bus priority measures and the use of urban traffic management and control systems.
