Summary

Eco-driving is a way to minimise fuel consumption by more efficient driving techniques, and driver training demonstrates how economic and environmental benefits can go hand in hand. Photo credit: Malmö LBC

Implementing sustainable mobility

The haulage company Malmo LBC is a major player in the Malmo transport market, operating 150 vehicles on a daily basis in the city of Malmo as well as on long-distance routes. It operates 250 heavy goods vehicles and depends on 300 drivers. With the goal of lowering the environmental impacts of its business, Malmo LBC created a training programme for its drivers on how to drive in a more fuel efficient and environmentally friendly way.

Specific goals were to:

  • develop a sustainable transport solution in Malmo with the lowest possible environmental impact and the highest levels of road safety;
  • train 200 drivers to drive in a more fuel efficient way using a newly developed skills package; and
  • reduce fuel consumption by 1.07 million litres per year, with an accompanying saving of 2,793 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.

Progress

Malmo LBC joined the CIVITAS SMILE project in October 2005. After developing the tailor-made theoretical and practical training package for drivers of heavy goods vehicles, the actual training took place between October 2006 and November 2007. Each driver spent about two hours with an instructor for the practical training session, driving the same route once prior to instruction and subsequently according to the principles of eco-driving in order to compare fuel consumption.

Outcomes

During the training sessions, the average reduction in fuel consumption was 16 percent, making a lasting impression on drivers and motivating their continued participation in the training. Improved awareness among drivers also led to lower levels of damaged goods and vehicle accidents (by approximately 20 percent).

A total of 139 drivers were trained during the CIVITAS SMILE project.

The measure led to reduced fossil fuel consumption and a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

The benefit to the business in financial terms was more than twice the cost of implementing the measure.
