Summary

Ambitious traffic management measures can promote sustainable mobility by improving the quality of the public transportation network.

Implementing sustainable mobility

Faced with the challenge of rising volumes of traffic and a corresponding deterioration in air quality, the measure focused on the collection and processing of transport data in the city of La Rochelle and its surrounding communes in order to optimise the management of the public transportation system and improve its quality.

The integration of the public transport database with on-board geographical information systems (GIS) allows the Urban Community of La Rochelle to:

  • obtain a better understanding of the existing network, including services, infrastructure, signage and frequency;
  • analyse the location, condition, accessibility and security of public transport stops;
  • match transport services to demand; and
  • produce and update thematic maps for any given data.

Progress

The testing of the prototype database integrated with on-board GIS began in 2008, prior to equipping the entire fleet.

Outcomes

Rapid access to precise and reliable data was made available to the local authorities, facilitating decision making with respect to the bus network.

This fact sheet has been updated by a third party on the basis of available information (not by the city itself), therefore we do not guarantee any data with respect to their content, completeness or up-to-dateness.
