Attractive & Accessible Public Spaces to Promote Intermodal Leisure trips

Summary

The goal of this measure was to improve infrastructure for a sustainable mobility system in Limassol city. To achieve this, an “ecological route” created to combine all means of sustainable transport and a smart messaging system. New routes as well as maps and the use of all transport modes within the city centre were developed by using an integrated system of services.

The vision was to combine the use of all transport means within the city centre using integrated systems. To achieve this there is a clear need for “collection points” that will combine all means of sustainable transport and a smart messaging system. New routes as well as maps and guides were developed in order to promote ecological awareness.

Implementing sustainable mobility

Creation of an “Ecological Route”

For a part of the route of approximately 2 km within the city centre, appropriate marking and signage has been applied and necessary facilities developed at collection points (points where one can change from one mobility mode to another) in order to enable tourists to move around with bicycles, electric scouters and other electric vehicles. At the collection points, all necessary works and infrastructure were developed/constructed to serve users.

Those points include all necessary infrastructure for people waiting for transport (covered waiting area, messaging systems, toilets, etc.), places for parking of electric cars/bicycles/ scooters etc., as well as provision of infrastructure for transport means (charging points etc.). Smart messaging systems (smart/electronic and conventional), sensors in the route, dynamic messaging panels and suitable software was installed in order to inform users about the availability of all transport means – thereby increasing sharing and inter-sharing.

Stakeholder engagement

The Limassol Municipality cooperated with the Electricity Authority of Cyprus, the main electricity supplier in Cyprus and Next Bike CY, the only bike sharing company in the island  to support the actions of the measure.
