Accessibility in public transport: from the European to the local level/ from the local level to European one

On the 24th of February 2009, a seminar on accessibility in public transport was organised in La Rochelle, within the frame of the CIVITAS-SUCCESS project.This training seminar, intended for a French audience, was organised in the aim to review the extent to which European and local levels have been working and still work together for the implementation and the promotion of accessibility measures in transport: do these levels interact? How? Around this topic, the seminar presented the way the Urban Community of La Rochelle, supported by the European initiative CIVITAS, has implemented ambitious action in this field, and is now amongst the most advanced local authorities for accessibility in public transport.Other cases were studied in the frame of a global appraisal of accessibility schemes in France, with other examples of European projects dealing with accessibility in transport. The goal was to provide experts present with lightening elements, which were debated during a round table.The audience gathered professionals from local authorities and from transport, transport authorities, researchers, associations, and other organisations involved in the development and the concrete implementation of measures linked to accessibility in public transport.The session ended with a site visit to illustrate examples in La Rochelle(buses, paths, public roads, electric ferryman…).Accessibilité dans les transports publics : de l’Europe au local / du local à l’EuropeLe 24 février 2009, de 9h à 17h30, un séminaire sur l’accessibilité été organisé à La Rochelle, dans le cadre du projet CIVITAS-SUCCESS.Ce séminaire de formation, à destination d'un public français, été organisé afin d’examiner la manière dont se sont articulés et s’articulent encore les niveaux européen et local dans la mise en œuvre et la promotion de mesures d’accessibilité dans les transports: est-ce que ces niveaux interagissent? De quelle manière? Autour de cette thématique, le séminaire a présenté comment la ville de La Rochelle, supportée par l’ initiative européenne CIVITAS, a entrepris des actions ambitieuses dans le domaine, et figure aujourd’hui parmi les collectivités les plus avancées en matière d’accessibilité dans les transports publics. D’autres cas français étaient présentés dans le cadre d'un bilan sur les Schémas Directeurs d'Accessibilité, ainsi que des exemples de projets européens traitant de l’accessibilité dans les transports, afin d’apporter aux experts présents des éléments de réponse illustrés qui étaient débattus lors d'une table ronde.Le public était composé de professionnels des collectivités locales, autorités organisatrices des transports, chercheurs, associations, professionnels des transports, et autre organismes impliqué dans l’élaboration et la mise en œuvre concrète des mesures liées à l’accessibilité dans les transports publics.La journée était clôturée par une visite de site d'aménagements accessibles des transports publics de La Rochelle (bus, cheminement, voirie, passeur électrique...).
