Zadar (Croatia)
Zadar is a historic coastal city on the Adriatic Sea with about 75,000 inhabitants and an area of roughly 194 km². Its peninsula layout and seasonal tourism peaks create mobility challenges, especially congestion and high car use around the old town and Gaženica port. To address this, Zadar is developing strategic transport planning tools including a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) to reduce car dependency, enhance walking and cycling infrastructure, improve public transport accessibility and safety, and lower emissions.
These efforts are tied to broader regional and EU goals for sustainable transport, with projects such as the Master Plan for Sustainable Mobility of the Zadar Region and Intelligent Transport Systems supporting real-time traffic management. Zadar also participates in cross-border initiatives like SUMMA to improve multimodal connections and promote greener mobility solutions across coastal hinterlands.
