Valongo (Portugal)

Valongo is a municipality in the District of Porto, located about 10 km from Porto, in northern Portugal. It has adopted an ambitious urban mobility agenda aimed at shifting long-established travel habits toward more sustainable modes. Although these changes have not always been immediately welcomed, the municipality has demonstrated a clear commitment to sustainable urban development.

This commitment includes policies to promote active mobility, improve public transport, and requalify road space to enhance safety and accessibility. Key initiatives include the Municipal Accessibility Plan for All, the development of a cycling network, and measures to reduce the impacts of road traffic while encouraging more sustainable car use and coordination at the supra-municipal level.

Valongo approved its Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan in 2017, reinforcing its commitment to active, inclusive, and sustainable mobility. Its main objectives are to rationalize private car use, strengthen public transport, promote walking and cycling, ensure environmental quality, and improve road safety.
