Ruse (Bulgaria)

Ruse is a major Bulgarian city on the right bank of the Danube River, serving as a key cross-border hub to Romania via the Danube Bridge, which strongly shapes transport flows and regional connectivity. With about 121,168 residents within the city proper, Ruse acts as a focal point for regional freight, rail and road links in northern Bulgaria’s flat Danubian Plain, influencing mobility planning toward both local accessibility and international connectivity.

The municipality is actively advancing sustainable mobility through strategic planning and infrastructure investments. Ruse has developed a new Plan for Sustainable Urban Mobility (2026–2036) aligned with European SUMP guidelines and currently undergoing public consultation — outlining measures to decarbonise transport, enhance cycling and walking networks, and improve public transit efficiency. Additionally, the city is implementing an integrated urban transport project that renovates arterial boulevards with bike lanes and upgrades public transport with electric buses and charging stations to lower emissions and improve service quality
