Plovdiv (Bulgaria)
Plovdiv is the second largest city in Bulgaria, located on the banks of the Maritsa River, approximately 152 km southeast of the capital, Sofia. It is recognised as an important economic, transport, cultural and educational centre. Mobility challenges within Plovdiv are primarily related to traffic management and local behaviour and attitudes.
With a lack of real-time information, passengers are unable to rely on public transport services. Despite this, bus usage remains high, at 23%. Additionally, a lack of support among local policymakers in favour of sustainable traffic management measures make it challenging for active modes of travel to grow in popularity. Only 1% of the local population cycles, while 29% walk. Private motor vehicle use within the city represents the highest modal share, at 41%.
In 2023, Plovdiv published its Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, which aims to improve public transport infrastructure and reliability. Additionally, it outlines plans to implement integrated tariff policies, parking management measures and improve conditions for safe travel.
