Lviv (Ukraine)

Lviv, the largest city in western Ukraine, is located on a series of rolling hills approximately 70 km from the Polish border. Its historic street pattern, UNESCO-listed city centre and hilly topography present unique mobility challenges, requiring careful management of traffic while preserving heritage and improving accessibility. As a major regional economic and transport hub, Lviv also experiences high commuter demand and significant freight movements.

The city adopted its Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) in 2020, establishing a long-term vision to prioritise people over vehicles. The strategy focuses on expanding public transport, improving walking and cycling infrastructure, introducing dedicated bus lanes, enhancing road safety through Vision Zero principles, and promoting electromobility. Despite the challenges posed by the ongoing war, the city continues investing in resilient, low-carbon and accessible mobility systems.
