L'HOSPITALET DE LLOBREGAT (Spain)
L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, located immediately southwest of Barcelona, is Spain's second most densely populated municipality, with more than 280,000 residents living within just 12.4 km². Its compact urban form, flat topography and integration within the Barcelona metropolitan area create both opportunities and challenges for sustainable mobility. High population density and significant commuter flows require efficient public transport and careful management of limited public space.
The city has prioritised reducing car dependency through its Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PMUS), which promotes walking, cycling, public transport and safer, more accessible streets. As part of the Barcelona metropolitan transport network, L'Hospitalet benefits from extensive metro, commuter rail, tram and bus services, supporting high levels of sustainable travel. The city's Urban Agenda 2024ā2050 further reinforces objectives to improve public space, reduce emissions and enhance climate resilience. Future priorities include expanding active mobility infrastructure, improving road safety, and creating a healthier, more inclusive urban environment while accommodating continued urban growth.
