Krems (Austria)

Krems an der Donau is a statutory city in Lower Austria on the Danube River at the eastern edge of the Wachau Valley — geography that naturally supports walking and cycling along its riverfront and in its historic centre, but also requires careful planning of transit corridors to manage visitor flows and regional connections.

The city has around 25,000 inhabitants and is a regional hub for education, culture and tourism. Krems integrates sustainability into broad planning frameworks like Stadtentwicklung Krems 2030, which includes goals to enhance public transport, walking and cycling, improve the quality of life and shift mobility toward low-emission modes by improving services and infrastructure, including expanded bus services and shared mobility options.

This strategy underpins climate and energy goals set in the Krems2030 climate-neutral city roadmap, targeting climate neutrality by 2040 with coordinated action in mobility, energy and urban form. Krems also celebrates events such as European Mobility Week involving neighbouring municipalities to promote active travel and collaboration.
