Koprivnica (Croatia)

Koprivnica is a medium-sized city in northern Croatia, located near the Hungarian border on flat terrain crossed by major national roads that bring high traffic volumes through its compact centre, presenting challenges for congestion, safety and emissions. The city has been a pioneer in sustainable mobility planning in Croatia, becoming the first Croatian city to adopt a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) in July 2015, developed under the CIVITAS DYN@MO project with wide stakeholder and public participation. Its SUMP aims to improve traffic safety, reduce noise and air pollution, promote walking and cycling, enhance public transport services, and foster e-mobility with electric vehicles and charging infrastructure.

Koprivnica’s transport strategy builds on early programmes such as Town on the Move and Streets for People, which increased active travel, supported extensive cycling networks and established sustainable mobility as part of local planning. The city also hosts a South-East Europe SUMP Competence Centre to share best practices and support mobility planning in the region.
