Ioannina (Greece)
Ioannina is the most important city of northwestern Greece. Its position is strategic as it is located at the junction of two main highways, the Egnatia and the Ionia, in a small distance from the borders with Albania but also from the international port of Igoumenitsa. The city of Ioannina is located between high, green mountains and rushing rivers, while a special place in the area is occupied by Lake Pamvotida and its island - the only inhabited lake island in Greece, with a traditional settlement-, forming a special and beautiful natural environment. The city has always been a famous center of commerce, education and crafts, while at the last years it has become a popular tourist destination.
Ioannina committed to become a climate-neutral city until 2030, having eliminated the production of greenhouse gases. Therefore, a major upheaval for the transport sector is planned, which will, in fact, bring about radical changes at all levels, from freight to walking. This will transform most areas of city life. The milestones of the Sustainable Mobility Plan are Walking, Bicycle and Public Transport. A precondition for the above is to provide more space, which will necessarily be taken from the space occupied by the car. These milestones will radically change mobility as we know it until today.
