Hasselt (Belgium)

Hasselt is the capital of the Limburg province in northeastern Belgium, spanning roughly 102 km² and home to about 90,249 residents as of 2025. Its geography — flat terrain with the Demer River and the Albert Canal running through the city — supports regional transport networks by road, rail, cycling and water corridors and shapes plans to balance connectivity with sustainable travel. Hasselt’s mobility approach aims to reduce car dependency and promote sustainable modes through integrated planning. The city has pioneered free or subsidised bus services, expanded cycling initiatives like I Bike, I Move and installed secure bike parking and rentals, all supporting modal shift and lowering emissions. Hasselt collaborated with neighbouring Genk on a joint Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) aimed at active mobility, public transport enhancement and discouraging polluting vehicles — a strategic vision running toward 2040.

Hasselt also coordinates urban logistics innovations like the City Depot electric distribution system to reduce freight impacts in the historic centre.
