Egaleo (Greece)
Egaleo (Aigaleo), located in the western part of the Athens metropolitan area, is a densely populated municipality with approximately 65,000 residents. Built on relatively flat terrain between central Athens and Mount Aigaleo, the city is a key gateway to western Attica and experiences significant commuter traffic. Its strategic location along major transport corridors and the Athens Metro network makes sustainable mobility a central priority, while limited public space requires careful management of competing transport demands.
The municipality is implementing a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) as part of its broader 2024ā2028 Strategic and Operational Programme. The plan prioritises walking, cycling, public transport, road safety and accessibility, while reducing private car dependence and greenhouse gas emissions. Egaleo is also investing in smart city technologies, electromobility and climate resilience through European projects, supporting a transition towards cleaner, more efficient urban transport. These initiatives aim to improve connectivity, public space and quality of life while strengthening the city's environmental sustainability.
