Clermont-Ferrand (France)
Clermont-Ferrand is a central French city in the Auvergne region, lying on the Limagne plain surrounded by volcanic highlands, with roughly 150,000 inhabitants within the city and around 295,000 in Clermont Auvergne Métropole’s ~300 km² territory. Geography influences mobility planning, with flat plains favouring cycling and denser transit, while surrounding uplands shape regional connectivity. Sustainable mobility is guided by the Plan de Déplacements Urbains (PDU) of Clermont Auvergne Métropole, the equivalent of a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, organising transport modes to reduce car use, improve air quality and support walking, cycling and public transport. Public transport includes the electric tramway and a reorganised bus network under the InspiRe programme, adding Bus à Haut Niveau de Service (BHNS) routes, new cycle infrastructure and prioritised transit corridors. The area is also introducing hydrogen buses to cut emissions. Traffic calming, limited-traffic zones and expanded bike-sharing (“C.vélo”) complement efforts to shift to low-carbon travel.
