Burgas (Bulgaria)

Burgas is a major coastal city on the Black Sea in southeastern Bulgaria, surrounded by Burgas Bay and the Burgas Lakes, which shape its urban mobility and transport networks. As Bulgaria’s fourth-largest city, with an estimated ~212,700 inhabitants (2026), Burgas is a regional hub for tourism, industry and maritime transport. Its flat coastal setting supports extensive road and public transport systems, but also seasonal travel pressures from tourism and port activity. Burgas has developed a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP, 2014–2020) that outlines goals to improve accessibility, boost public transport and active mobility, reduce emissions and enhance road safety, and to transition toward diversified transport modes, including cycling and intelligent transport systems.

Mobility strategy implementation includes upgrading real-time public transport information systems and expanding infrastructure within the city, and is supported by the Integrated Urban Transport of Burgas initiative.
