Vitoria-Gasteiz launches long-term bike hire

While switching from one public bike hire scheme to the next, Vitoria-Gasteiz offers long-term bicycle hire for a deposit of €25.

The Bicycle Hire Service in Vitoria-Gasteiz has recently ceased operations. However, it is expected that a fourth generation public bicycle scheme will be operational in late summer 2012. During the transition from one system to the next, the City Council will launch a long-term bicycle hire service. Of the 250 public bikes, 100 will be available to citizens who request them, 50 will be for tourism services and 100 will become part of the municipal fleet for use by city workers. People over 18 who are registered in Vitoria-Gasteiz can apply for a bicycle. If the number of applications exceeds the number of bicycles available, a lottery will be organised. Once the contract has been signed and a deposit of €25 has been paid, the bicycle will be handed over. From that moment until the return of the bike, the person is in charge of looking after the bike and any maintenance. At the end of the rental period, the bicycle must be returned in good condition. At this point the deposit will be returned. "With this action, the City Council seeks to offer citizens the possibility to access a bicycle without having to buy it, and also to still make the most of the public bike system that has recently ceased operations," said Councilor Idoia Garmendia.
