Uniting cycling and tourism at fair trade in Ljubljana

CIVITAS Initiative

A group of CIVITAS ELAN local partners participated in the “Tourism and spare time” trade fair in Ljubljana, which took place in January 2010. Instead of a typical stand as an info-point, the ELAN representatives chose a special, attractive tricycle with carriage. The stand exhibited gadgets, promotional material and provided information about the project.

There was also a prize “cycling” quiz and organisers presented some of the measures on a roundtable, with an emphasis on cycling strategy related to tourism. The department for economics, public companies and traffic officials, City of Ljubljana, accompanied the CIVITAS ELAN presentation by adding important information about measurements with regard to cycle traffic in Ljubljana. According to these data, the numbers of cyclists are increasing, which presents and even bigger challenge for local authorities, who tend to improve cycling conditions in the city. Furthermore, the city representatives introduced website Gremo na pot (“Let’s hit the road”) to the public, where citizens can find actual information, road maps and advice about cycling in Ljubljana and the surrounding areas.Ljubljana is a vibrant city, that has all the facilities of a modern capital, and yet it has preserved its small-town friendliness and relaxed atmosphere. It is small enough, so that almost anyone can cycle through it in about an hour. The surrounding areas, packed with natural beauty and cultural sights bearing witness to the city's dynamic history, are renowned for their walking, hiking and cycle trails.
