Successful kick-off for the dynamic SUMP process
On Saturday 22 June 2013, hundreds of citizens in Aachen used the opportunity to comment on the current transport situation in the city and have a look on the future of mobility.
The citizen workshop on mobility had a great turnout and within a framework of an exhibition, various themes of transport were discussed. „I am very delighted to see how many citizens have showed interest in this event“, says Gisela Nacken, Head of Planning and Environmental Department in the City of Aachen. „This makes it clear that the mobility issues have a significant role in the quality of life of the citizens of Aachen.“ The event was a kick-off for the citizen dialogue in the framework of developing a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, SUMP (Verkehrsentwicklungsplan). Until 14 July, the citizens in Aachen can share their opinion in a survey poll about the future mobility issues in the internet. In the autumn, the results of the survey will be fed into the political process. The event focused on both the current transport problems and the future vision until the year 2050. Many citizens raised critical issues about the current situation but also gave suggestions of improvements to solve current problems. Within the SUMP process, the City of Aachen will continue to engage in a dialogue with the citizens. The SUMP process in Aachen is part of the CIVITAS DYN@MO project and later on in the project, a regional dynamic SUMP will be developed.
