SUCCESS launches new handbook to inspire better construction supply chains

SUCCESS - Sustainable Urban Consolidation CentrES for construction – has published a report aimed at construction companies and local authorities, which includes over 20 examples of good practice in supply chain management in the construction sector.

Covering the areas of logistics operations, policies, advanced technologies and integrated supply chains, each good practice example is explained through with real-world case studies and includes relevant information to understand at a glance its purpose, its main characteristics, the results it helped to achieve and how it can be adapted to new applications. The report is intended as a handbook for decision-makers, with information on cost estimations, time requirements and complexity to help the user identify the examples that could be replicated to fit their own needs.

A particularly notable example of many useful cases in the handbook is the Construction Consolidation Centre (CCC), which shows how to reduce the negative aspects of urban freight transport caused by construction. The concept is very similar to the better known Urban Consolidation Centre (UCC), but it is focused on customers from the construction sector. Instead of delivering directly to the construction site, suppliers can deliver to a CCC situated closer to the site. Deliveries are then consolidated and carried out to the construction sites. Further benefits include logistics and retail services, such as temporary material storage, recycling and off-site construction.

The SUCCESS project aims to make the most of the construction industry’s huge potential for improvement. As one of the largest consumers of urban freight transport, a more innovative approach to construction logistics and supply chain management could help reduce pollution, congestion, noise, accidents and increase productivity and transport efficiency in the sector.

The SUCCESS team is organising a series of workshops this year involving non-partner cities interested in how to reduce the side effects of construction works. If your city wants to benefit from SUCCESS’ solutions and take the opportunity to discuss the issue with its local stakeholders, please contact ciorfida [at] regione [dot] emilia-romagna [dot] it.
