Students Make for a More Sustainable Future

CIVITAS Initiative

The Urban Public Transportation Services of Coimbra (SMTUC) has kicked off the programme of student visits for the school year of 2011/ 12. This year, students have a lot of fun with the new project "jingle" while learing about sustainable mobility.

Every year, SMTUC hosts hundreds of students from the various elementary schools in Coimbra. During these visits, students learn about best practice with regards to sustainable mobility (picture 1 and 2). The visits involve a ride on a mini-electric bus (“Pantufinhas”) and a conversation with specialised SMTUC staff about the benefits of using public transportation and forms of alternative mobility. Students are also informed about the various measures of the CIVITAS MODERN project. The mini-hydro electric power plant at the local river dam and the use of electric power in the SMTUC fleet are issues that always animate discussions. This year students are encouraged to compete for the best illustration of the MODERN “jingle” that was presented at the CIVITAS Forum in October 2011. It goes: These cities are great! You can cycle, run and skate go rarely by car cause by bus you go far! Lets move together and change forever!
