Spring and summer campaigns in Coimbra

CIVITAS Initiative

Representatives of CIVITAS MODERN were busy making their presence felt out on the streets of Coimbra throughout spring and summer. Stakeholder participation, the promotion of environment friendly behaviour, informing and involving the people and recognising good practices were all on the agenda.

In order to get stakeholders involved, MODERN was presented in Coimbra at ACIC- Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Coimbra, last spring and the main implemented measures in Coimbra were introduced. These measures are important steps towards the effective improvement of the quality of public transportation and citizen mobility.International Children's Day took place in the city park of Coimbra in June. Children aged from 3 to 9 took part in several activities in the City Park of Coimbra, featuring Peddy-paper in which project Modern participated. About 500 children, along with their teachers and educators, participated in this activity, focused on a public transport pedagogy. From 26 June to 7 July, Modern took part in CIC, represented by a stand, where much information about the ongoing measures in Coimbra was available. During the same time, several activities animated the stand in order to captivate the visitors and tell them about the project. The fair had about 70,000 visitors not only from Coimbra but also from the surrounding area.Included in the ECOXXI Programme, the Green Flag was awarded to the city halls for their environmental best practices. The ceremony happened in the Technology and Science Park in Maia and it was the result of the acknowledgement for the work that has been developed by the city hall of Coimbra in the environment field.Project ECOXXI is promoted by the European Blue Flag Association since 2006 aiming at recognising sustainability best practices developed by the city hall. It values a set of features considered fundamental to the construction of a sustainable development, built upon two pillars: education and environmental quality. Coimbra was recognised for its best environmental practices, especially the ongoing measures of the CIVITAS MODERN, which has contributed to the improvement of the public transports quality, environmental sustainability of the city and friendlier environmental behaviour and attitude.
