Real-time traffic monitoring for citizens of Tallinn
With the introduction of monitoring devices at Tallinn’s main intersections in early April, citizens can now check the traffic situation in real time online, including on smartphones.
The traffic monitoring system is available to the public on http://seire.tallinn.ee. It helps reduce congestion and improve public transport planning. The system counts the vehicles passing intersections and sends the data to a server every minute. The monitoring system has two outputs. One for the traffic managers and another one for public use. The output for traffic planning experts shows the dynamics of traffic flows, classifications of vehicles and other data useful for traffic management. The public output shows the traffic situation at intersections and rates congestion through a traffic lights principle. A green arrow indicates that the intersection is passable without problems; yellow warns about possible congestion and a red arrow means that the intersection may take several traffic lights cycles to cross. In addition to sensors, the new monitoring system is connected to the central server and features new software, communications, power and security devices. The sensors were produced specifically for Tallinn by Swiss company ADEC Technologies.
