New stars of CIVITAS ELAN Open Academy shine in Ljubljana

CIVITAS Initiative

CIVITAS ELAN's Open Academy is a well known knowledge and experience sharing series of events in Ljubljana, organised by Urban Planning Institute and the City of Ljubljana. In the framework of this programme six mobility experts have been invited to Ljubljana in order to present their work to Slovenian public. In March 2011, the team in Ljubljana again hosted two more experts on sustainable mobility.

On 11 March, the guest was Vincent Meerschaert, a consultant at mobility management company Traject from Gent. He gave a lecture on best European practices in transport policies and sustainable urban transport plans, based on a study “Sustainable Mobile Cities”. This event attracted around 130 people in the City Hall, which is a record in the history of Open Academy. Twenty days later, the City Hall was filled with those who attended the lectures and “walkshop“ (on-field workshop) about the benefits of walking and its “implementation” in the city. The star of the event was Bronwen Thornton, Development Director at Walk 21, an international conference series, professional network and consultancy service set up to develop and share best practice which encourages more people to walk. Other presenters – among them was also the Vice Mayor, professor Janez Koželj – spoke about new pedestrian zones in Ljubljana, data collection, citizen engagement and other interesting experiences in this area.
