New passenger record in San Sebastian

In San Sebastian, the number of passengers in urban buses has increased for the seventh consecutive year. Since 2004, the figure has grown by 12 percent. For the first time in the history of the city, it has surpassed 29.2 million in 2011.

This achievement becomes even more impressive when compared to the overall downward trend of 5 percent in Spain. The increase in passengers is a result of the continuous efforts of DonostiaBus to increase the quality of its service. In the course of the CIVITAS ARCHIMDES project, an integrated set of public transport measures has been implemented, including: The introduction of the Bus Rapid Transit concept; New exclusive bus lanes and public transport priority at traffic lights; New passenger information systems; On-board video cameras to increase the feeling of safety among passengers; and New lines, increased frequencies and serving business districts and the Ibaeta University Campus.   The increase in passenger numbers in 2011 has been achieved mainly because of the growing number of trips on line 5 and 31. Both lines have been redesigned as part of CIVITAS measures to improve the public transport connection to the university campus and the Miramón business district.
