New European Commission tool analyses transport innovation effectiveness

The European Commission (EC) has launched a new tool for analysing transport innovation effectiveness, the Transport Research and Innovation Monitoring and Information System (TRIMIS).

TRIMIS maps and assesses technology trends and research and innovation capacities across Europe’s transport sector. At its heart sits a comprehensive and open-access database of transport projects and programmes, alongside transport technologies and innovations.

These are arranged within seven Strategic Transport Research and Innovation Agenda (STRIA) roadmaps. The STRIAs form part of the EC’s new package of transport initiative, "Europe on the Move", which were announced in May 2017. TRIMIS monitor the implementation and effectiveness of the seven roadmaps.

Users of the tool can search through the projects and programmes using a number of filters:

  • The STRIA roadmap they belong to;
  • Transport mode;
  • Transport policies;
  • Transport sector;
  • Funding origin.

Users can submit their own projects and programmes to the database. There are also overviews of the organisation of transport research in the 31 European Research Area countries and others outside of Europe.

The information and data on transport research and innovation communicates the progress made and issues to be addressed to key target groups, including policy makers, experts and authorities in the Member States, researchers, and the industrial and financial sectors.

It also enables researchers and policy makers to identify the innovations with the greatest future potential, and assists the latter in determining the areas in which action would be of greatest public value.

TRIMIS replaces the Transport Research & Innovation Portal (TRIP), and incorporates its database of over 10,000 EU and national level transport research projects.
