Ljubljana - Greenest Local Authority 2011

On 31 January 2012, the City of Ljubljana was proclaimed the "Greenest Local Authority 2011" in an award ceremony at Ljubljana City Hall. Twenty-eight local authorities from Slovenia applied for the title in 2011.

The competition has been running for the second year organised by the Fit media d.o.o. under the Green Slovenia trademark in partnership with the Slovenian Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning, the Association of Municipalities of Slovenia and the Association of Municipalities and Towns of Slovenia. Among the competing authorities were four urban local authorities, 14 municipalities with over 5,000 residents and ten authorities with up to 5,000 residents. The local authorities taking part in this competition demonstrated their commitment to responsible environmental management, competing in categories of waste management, water, energy, communication and awareness-raising as well as sustainable transport. CIVITAS ELAN has been working hard in the past few years to improve sustainable transport in Ljubljana, which has certainly contributed to the recognition through the award.
