Groningen to be host of next year's European SUMP Conference
The City of Groningen has been announced as the host of the 6th European Conference on Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans in 2019. The news was announced by Maja Bakran Marchich, deputy Director General of DG MOVE, during the closing plenary of the 5th SUMP conference.
Groningen is a mid-size European city in the Netherlands, known as a living lab for emerging mobility technologies and as a leader in sustainable mobility, cycling in particular. Their current SUMP plan is for the period 2018-2021, and has an investment volume of over 1 billion euro.
- In 2014 Groningen was a finalist for the first EU iCapital Award.
- Groningen is an ITS test field for 5G technology with autonomous PeopleMovers.
- The Groningen cycling modal split is over 60% of movements, making it arguably the world's cycling capital.
- In freight logistics, there has been an emergence of (E-) bicycle use.
- Groningen is hosting the 2019 International Cargobike Festival 14-16 June.
