Green Travel Week - Norwich
UEA’s first ever green Travel Week has been hailed a success. A programme of free events and activities was offered along with free gifts to encourage and reward individuals who do their bit to reduce congestion and CO2 emissions. The week was a joint initiative funded by the University and CIVITAS.
The week saw more than 100 people taking up the offer to try the bus for free, over 150 walkers provided with pedometers and breakfast bars and 250 cyclists rewarded with breakfast, with one person cycling 13 miles for the first time to take part.The launch of the buy-cycle scheme was a success with all the bikes available on the day being snapped up. Dr Bike, in conjunction with Norfolk Police, provided two days of cycle health checks and repairs and more than 60 cycles were coded to help deter theft. The Company of Cyclists “try it” bike show proved a hit, with students in particular enjoying putting bikes of all shapes and sizes to the test.Drive Smart was the theme for Friday, with staff and students given then opportunity to test their eco-driving skills on the Energy Trust Eco Driving Simulator. After a busy day the trophy for UEA Eco-driver was won by a student from Environmental Sciences, with a near perfect score.Dawn Dewar, Measure Leader said “Green Travel Week was very much about raising awareness. It is clear from talking to the many people who attended the events that they really do care about the planet, their health and their wealth.”
