Funchal's mobility project wins inspirational award

CIVITAS Initiative

On 23 June, 2011 in Brussels, the "Innovative and Sustainable Mobility" project of Funchal’s regional transport company, Horários do Funchal, was announced winner of the RegioStars category "Integrated Clean Urban Transport”.

RegioStars winners are recognised as leaders that inspire other regions to pursue the same goals. Winning this award is a great achievement for both Horarios do Funchal and CIVITAS MIMOSA. Formed under CIVITAS MIMOSA and Madeira’s INTERVIR+ programme, the “Innovative and Sustainable Mobility in Funchal" project is all about increasing the demand for public transport, the degree of customer satisfaction and service efficiency through innovative models of assessment. The introduction of new types of small- and medium-sized buses in the Funchal fleet is one of the measures highlighted in the project. This new bus service provides transportation at unusual hours as well as allowing access to areas that other types of transportation cannot reach. “Innovative and Sustainable Mobility in Funchal" has set itself the task of creating synergies for better socio-economic mobility and in doing so, create a better environment and higher quality of life in urban areas.
