First private bike storage boxes in Gent

CIVITAS Initiative

With the help of the CIVITAS project, Gent's ELAN partner 'Max Mobiel' launched the first 25 bike boxes. These private bike boxes can be used to park your own or a rental bicycle and should help commuters and citizens to leave their car parked outside the city centre and to continue their trip by bicycle.

Reaching the city center by car is not always that easy, it is often stressful, time consuming and above all, expensive. For some time now, there are free Park & Ride sites at the main entrance roads to the city centre and at important public transport points. Since December 2009, commuters and visitors can switch to their bike here in a safe way. The City of Gent realised this new 'P+C' concept (Parking and Cycling), together with Max Mobiel. The most important aspects of the boxes are that bicycles are stored safely and always protected from the weather. Twenty five of these boxes will be installed on big Park & Ride sites in the suburbs of Gent. The price to rent such a box starts at 5 Euros. This initiative gives the citizens and commuters a safe and cheap solution to reach the city centre.
